Recently, I discovered that a known sex offender was working at the arcade we frequently visit, where my children spend their leisure time. This individual had managed to befriend my children without our knowledge of his past offenses.

Arcades are places of fun and entertainment, cherished by families and especially children. However, they must also be safe havens. This disturbing incident highlights a severe loophole in safety regulations - not requiring arcade staff to undergo enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. Such checks would provide a critical layer of security, ensuring that individuals with a known history of serious criminal offenses, such as sexual crimes, have no access to vulnerable individuals, particularly children.

Enhanced DBS checks are thorough criminal record checks that are essential in settings where staff have regular contact with minors. These checks are already mandatory in many sectors across the UK, such as teaching and healthcare, due to the vulnerable groups involved.
