The Issue

Navigating the world as a visually impaired person comes with daily challenges that most might not even consider. One such challenge is dining out. As someone who is registered blind, I face the frustrating barrier of not being able to independently read menus at my favourite eateries. I'm always reliant on the company of others to make such a basic decision—a decision that should be a personal and enjoyable experience.

Currently, many chain food establishments in the UK fall short when it comes to making their menus accessible to everyone. This is not just an inconvenience; it's an exclusion. Imagine going to your favourite restaurant and not being able to read what's on offer. It strips away the sense of independence and spontaneity that's part of the joy of dining out.

Our goal is to require that all chain food establishments across the United Kingdom provide their menus in accessible formats. This includes Braille, large print, high contrast black and white text, and screen-reader compatible digital formats. Making menus accessible is not an insurmountable task—it is a necessity.

According to the Royal National Institute of Blind People, there are over two million people in the UK living with sight loss. Accessibility in public spaces is a right, not a privilege. By offering accessible menu options, food establishments can not only broaden their customer base but also champion inclusivity and equality.

Change is possible, and it starts with awareness and action. We are calling on all chain restaurants, cafés, and food establishments to take this crucial step towards inclusivity. By signing this petition, you're advocating for a world where everyone can enjoy a meal out with dignity and independence. Please join us in demanding change now. Sign the petition today to make dining out a truly inclusive experience for all.
