The Issue

I was recently involved in a frightening accident at the intersection of Copley Avenue and 35th Street in San Diego. Like many drivers before me, I was t-boned while cautiously making my way through this dangerous intersection. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident. Local residents rushed to my aid, only to tell me that "it happens all the time."

The current setup features a two-way stop that puts drivers and pedestrians at risk due to significant visual obstructions. A large bush and parked vehicles continually block the sightlines of drivers trying to navigate through the intersection. This significant hazard not only endangers motorists but also pedestrians who may be crossing in the area.

The solution is clear and actionable: transform this perilous intersection into a four-way stop. This simple change would improve safety for everyone who travels through this area. Additionally, trimming back the obstructive vegetation on city property would enhance visibility and further reduce the risk of accidents. These measures are both practical and necessary.

Let's consider the data. According to the San Diego traffic reports, intersections without adequate stop signs see higher rates of collisions and near misses. In a city priding itself on safety and community well-being, these statistics are a call to action rather than mere numbers.

Our families, children, and community members deserve to feel safe while traveling the streets of San Diego. Every accident impacts not only the individuals involved but also the community that rallies to their aid, shaking our collective confidence in the safety of our neighborhood roads. We have the opportunity to change that situation and prevent future needless injuries.

By signing this petition, you're not just advocating for safer streets in San Diego; you're joining a movement toward a community where safety comes first and everyone looks out for one another.

Please sign this petition to urge the San Diego City Council to implement a four-way stop at Copley Avenue and 35th Street. Together, we can make our community safer for everyone.

Responded
“Thank you to everyone who has supported the petition, “Require a four-way stop at Copley and 35th in San Diego.” I appreciate the community engagement behind this effort and your commitment to your neighborhood. This intersection is in Council District 9, represented by Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera, outside the District 3 boundaries I represent. I encourage you to work with his office and the Normal Heights Community Planning Group to pursue the City’s alternative process for considering stop signs under Council Policy 200-08. If the intersection does not meet the City’s criteria following a Traffic Service Request evaluation, the community planning group can hold a vote to support the request. Councilmember Elo-Rivera can then request further action from the Transportation Department. Sharing your petition and neighborhood observations with his office and the planning group would be a useful next step. Thank you for taking the time to organize and make your voices heard. Councilmember Stephen Whitburn San Diego City Council, District 3”
