The Issue

The University of Regina is a diverse melting pot, with students hailing from various parts of the globe. Yet, there's an alarming lack of culinary representation for African students on campus. Personally, I have experienced this limitation, as the meals currently available neither cater to the traditional tastes of African cuisine nor offer the nutritional familiarity that African students depend on.

For the large community of African students, the absence of an African food vendor on campus means having to settle for meals that do not fully satisfy our cultural and nutritional needs. Many African students find these meals inadequate, compelling us either to skip meals or limit ourselves to a single, unsatisfying meal while in school. This not only affects our meal satisfaction but also impacts our cultural connection and comfort, especially for those far from home.

Implementing an African food vendor on campus isn't just about offering food; it's about embracing diversity and ensuring that all students feel represented and valued in their community. African cuisine offers a wealth of variety, rich flavors, and wholesome nutrition that could benefit not only African students but also introduce other students to new and enriching culinary experiences.

We propose that the University administration collaborates with local African chefs or culinary teams to establish a vendor or a dedicated food outlet on the campus. This vendor should serve authentic African meals, such as jollof rice, ugali, injera, fufu, and other traditional dishes, which could be a unique addition to the campus dining scene.

Access to traditional meals on campus could boost morale and promote inclusivity among African students while enriching the culinary diversity of the university. This action reinforces the idea that cultural representation matters in every aspect of life, including our dietary options.

We call upon the University of Regina to take immediate action in recognizing the dietary needs of their student body by ensuring the availability of an African food vendor. Sign this petition to show your support for a diverse and inclusive dining experience that respects and celebrates all cultural backgrounds. Let's work together towards a more inclusive campus dining experience for everyone!
