I've noticed there are alot of parents and even students that are not aware of the fact most school busses do not have air conditioning. As a school bus driver I struggle from the heat and I couldn't imagine how hard it is on the children. I have to listen to these little ones tell me "their hot", "they need water", "they don't feel good". It breaks my heart. We don't have a.c. on school busses, putting the windows down does not help, sometimes it makes it worse, when we have to sit in the sun for 20 minutes outside of the school the seats get to hot to touch, I couldn't touch the seats the other day and I had to allow these children to sit on them. The windows are higher than the seats, the students can't feel the air flow and I honestly don't notice any difference in tempurature when their down. These children are soaking wet from sweat, their tired, they get bloody noses, they don't feel good. I don't have students fall asleep on the bus all winter long but it's a regular thing in the summer and I don't think it's from them being tired, I think its from heat exhaustion. It is typically at least 10 degrees hotter in a school bus than it is outside. A thermometer in my bus this past week as been over 100 degrees everyday inside, with no air flow it's not healthy for the students or the drivers. Our clothes are wet at the end of our shifts from sweat, their wet within minutes of being on the bus. I have over 50 students on the bus at a time, only 52 fit 2 to a seat, and if we have more than 52 we have to make them sit 3 to a seat which doesnt help when everyones hot and now their crowded as well, the most ive had is 67 students, even the smallest ones do not fit 3 to a seat. We need to fight for the safety of our students being on these hot busses. Let's fight for a.c. for these children and the drivers that spend hours a day in these conditions.
