The Issue

For years, residents and property owners on Nevada Street between Ridgewood and Waugh have struggled with deteriorating road conditions, including potholes, uneven pavement, poor drainage, standing water, and repeated temporary patch repairs that have failed to provide a lasting solution.

These conditions create hazards for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and visitors while also causing unnecessary vehicle damage and worsening stormwater drainage issues. Standing water after rainfall further accelerates road deterioration and negatively impacts the safety, accessibility, and appearance of the neighborhood.

Residents believe the condition of Nevada Street now requires full resurfacing and infrastructure repair rather than continued short-term patchwork.

This issue is particularly frustrating given the substantial property tax contributions made by homeowners along this short stretch of Nevada Street. With approximately 40–50 residential units in the area, residents have likely contributed an estimated $6–10 million in local property taxes over the past decade to the City of Houston, Harris County, Houston ISD, and other taxing authorities. Despite these contributions, Nevada Street continues to remain in unacceptable condition.

Residents are also increasingly concerned that many nearby residential side streets throughout the Montrose area — including streets currently in noticeably better condition than Nevada Street — have received resurfacing, reconstruction, and repair work while Nevada Street continues to be overlooked. The lack of prioritization for one of the most visibly deteriorated streets in the immediate area has become a growing frustration for homeowners and residents.

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, poor road conditions cost U.S. drivers billions annually in additional vehicle repairs and operating costs. Nevada Street residents continue to bear these unnecessary costs due to the ongoing condition of the roadway.

We respectfully urge the City of Houston, Houston Public Works, and District C leadership to prioritize a comprehensive repair and resurfacing project for Nevada Street between Ridgewood and Waugh. Investing in a permanent solution will improve public safety, drainage, accessibility, and overall neighborhood quality of life.

We ask community members to support this effort by signing this petition and helping bring attention to the urgent need for action.
