Requesting a Moratorium on the Subdivision of Lots in the Village of Garden City

The Issue

Having called Garden City home for over 30 years, I've seen my share of changes, but none more concerning than the recent wave of property subdivisions across our Village. The property next to mine on New Hyde Park Road was purchased by a contractor intending to demolish the existing house and replace it with two large homes on the same lot. This isn't an isolated incident; it's a trend that's eroding the charm and character of our beloved Village. This builder did it on the corner of Tanners Pond Road and Somerset, on Kensington and Cambridge, on Russell and Transverse. He attempted to do it at the former location of Stutzman Realty on Nassau Boulevard. And now he has aspirations of chopping up our village on New Hyde Park Road. Out-of-town builders are systematically altering the landscape of Garden City, and unless we intervene, our Village as we know it will forever be changed.

The urgency for a moratorium on lot subdivisions across the Village cannot be overstated. One of the most charming aspects of Garden City lies in its spacious plots and the harmony between nature and neighborhood. But recent trends threaten to replace openness with overcrowding. This isn't merely an issue of maintaining aesthetic appeal; it poses significant safety and quality of life concerns. Our schools, for instance, are already under tremendous pressure, struggling to accommodate the ever-increasing number of students pouring in due to overdevelopment.

The infrastructure and public services in Garden City weren't designed to support these rapid changes. Increased traffic, reduced green spaces, and the strain on our schools and public services are stark realities we must confront unless immediate action is taken. We must put in place a moratorium that pauses subdivisions until a comprehensive assessment of their impact can be conducted.

Our community's future depends on proactive measures that safeguard its identity, resources, and harmony. A moratorium on lot subdivisions will grant us the time needed to plan responsibly and ensure that any development aligns with our values and capacities.

Stand with Garden City. Help preserve its character and secure its future for the generations to come by signing this petition!!! Thank you!
