Subject: Request for Flexible Work Arrangements for Mothers of Children up to 18 Months of Age
We, the undersigned, respectfully request the Government of India, industry leaders, and employers to consider introducing policies that provide greater workplace flexibility for mothers of children up to 18 months of age, particularly in roles where work can be performed remotely without affecting business operations.
India has made significant progress by providing paid maternity leave. However, motherhood does not become less demanding once maternity leave ends.
A child's developmental needs continue well beyond six months. Between 6 and 18 months, babies experience rapid physical, emotional, and cognitive growth. They begin sitting, crawling, eating solid foods, teething, walking, developing sleep patterns, and forming secure emotional bonds. During this stage, a mother's presence is essential—not only for feeding but also for nurturing, comfort, safety, and healthy development.
Despite this, many organizations have adopted mandatory work-from-office or hybrid policies with little or no flexibility for mothers returning from maternity leave. In some companies, breastfeeding is considered the only valid reason for flexibility, overlooking the many other developmental needs of young children.
We are not requesting permanent work from home for every employee. Instead, we request a balanced policy that recognizes the unique needs of early motherhood while respecting business requirements.
Our Requests
Allow flexible work arrangements for mothers of children up to 18 months of age in roles that can be performed remotely without impacting productivity.
Encourage organizations to assess flexibility based on the nature of the role rather than applying blanket return-to-office mandates.
Develop national guidelines encouraging employers to provide temporary flexible work options, such as remote work, flexible working hours, or phased return-to-office plans.
Promote family-friendly workplace policies that improve employee well-being, retention, diversity, and workforce participation.
Why This Matters
Better support for early childhood development.
Improved maternal mental health and well-being.
Higher employee retention and reduced attrition.
Greater participation of women in the workforce after childbirth.
Stronger, more inclusive workplaces that recognize caregiving responsibilities.
Many multinational organizations have already demonstrated that flexible work arrangements can coexist with high productivity, especially in technology and knowledge-based roles. India has the opportunity to become a global leader in creating workplaces that support both families and economic growth.
We believe that supporting mothers is not merely an employee benefit—it is an investment in the well-being of children, families, and the future workforce of our nation.
We respectfully urge policymakers, employers, and industry leaders to work together to create compassionate, practical, and inclusive workplace policies for mothers of young children.
Every child deserves care. Every mother deserves support.
