Request UCT SRC to Address Overwhelming Student Debt in a Mass Meeting

Request UCT SRC to Address Overwhelming Student Debt in a Mass Meeting
The Issue
We, the students of UCT, are calling for a mass meeting to address the concerns of all students. This request arises from the growing sentiment among students that the SRC has not been transparent, accountable, nor responsive in handling the issues of the student body as set out in the preamble of the SRC Constitution of 2016.
The specific issues that have urgently contributed to this request include, but are not limited to:
- Students facing overwhelming debt from 2024 due to the accommodation cap set by NSFAS.
- Defunded students struggling to find alternative means to finance their education.
- The "missing middle" students who do not qualify for financial aid yet cannot afford tuition and accommodation costs.
- Students who are unable to register for the 2025 academic year due to outstanding financial issues.
- Students who have had their accommodation offers revoked, leaving them without housing options for the upcoming year.
- The majority of NSFAS students who meet the requirements and whose debt was not reduced to R9999.99 as promised by the SRC.
- Graduating students who are unclear on their stance due to outstanding debt.
We seek active dialogue, meaningful engagement, and attainable solutions about this issue exerting immense pressure on us.
Let us raise our voices together and stand in solidarity with those bearing the intimidating burden of this crippling debt. We cannot ignore this issue any longer.
