Request to Pause and Reevaluate the Proposed EV Charger Location on South Buckhout Street
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Half Moon North Co-op Apartments and the surrounding South Buckhout area, respectfully request that the Village of Irvington pause and reevaluate the planned installation of three EV charging stations, six preferred EV parking spaces, and related electrical infrastructure, including a large electric box/panel, directly in front of residential homes on South Buckhout Street.
We support the Village’s sustainability goals and the expansion of EV infrastructure. However, we have significant concerns about this specific location and believe affected residents should have an opportunity to review the plans and provide input before installation proceeds.
Our concerns include:
Limited notice and resident input: Affected residents were not clearly informed of the proposed location, equipment, timeline, parking changes, or related infrastructure before installation appeared imminent. A project of this nature, especially one placed directly in front of homes, should include meaningful notice and an opportunity for residents to be heard before work begins.
Reduced reliable parking for residents: Even if the six preferred EV spaces remain technically open to other vehicles, they would no longer function as ordinary residential street parking. This would likely change parking patterns, increase competition for limited spaces, and reduce reliable access for residents who depend on South Buckhout Street for parking.
Pedestrian access and safety: The sidewalk/path in this area is regularly used by families with young children, strollers, older residents, dog walkers, delivery workers, and neighbors walking to town and the train. Charging cables, signage, utility equipment, and related infrastructure could narrow, obstruct, or complicate safe passage in an area that already serves as an important pedestrian route for the neighborhood.
Visual and residential impact: The three proposed charging stations, signage, cables, and large electrical panel/box would be placed directly in front of homes in one of the greener and more residential parts of Irvington. This could significantly affect the appearance, curb appeal, residential character, and enjoyment of the street for the residents who live immediately beside it.
Unclear site selection: We understand there may be electrical infrastructure reasons this location was identified. However, convenience or proximity to existing power infrastructure should not be the only factor in selecting a site, particularly where the impacts would be concentrated directly in front of residents’ homes. Residents should be shown whether less disruptive alternatives were considered and why they were rejected.
We respectfully ask the Village of Irvington to pause installation, share clear information about the full project scope, consider less disruptive alternative locations, and meet with affected residents before moving forward.
