Request to Increase the 1.5 cm Hair Length Limit to 5 cm at Addis Ababa University

Request to Increase the 1.5 cm Hair Length Limit to 5 cm at Addis Ababa University
The Issue
We, students of Addis Ababa University, respectfully request a review of the current policy limiting male students’ hair length to 1.5 cm.
We understand and appreciate the university’s intention to promote discipline, professionalism, and a clean academic environment following its transition to a private institution. Maintaining standards that reflect the university’s values is important. However, we believe that the current 1.5 cm limitation may unintentionally create financial and emotional strain on students.
1. Financial Impact on Students
Under the current standard, students must cut their hair approximately every one to two weeks to remain compliant. With haircut prices currently ranging between 300–500+ ETB and increasing due to inflation this creates a recurring expense that many students struggle to afford.
As students, our budgets are limited and often fixed, while living costs continue to rise. The frequency required to maintain a 1.5 cm length places an ongoing financial burden on us.
2. Hygiene vs. Length
We agree that students should maintain proper hygiene and a neat appearance. Clean, well-maintained hair reflects discipline and self-respect.
However, hygiene is not strictly determined by hair length. A 5 cm limit would still allow students to maintain a clean, professional look while reducing the need for extremely frequent haircuts.
3. Confidence and Academic Focus
When policies feel overly strict, they can affect students’ morale and confidence. A modest adjustment increasing the permitted length from 1.5 cm to 5 cm — would:
Maintain neatness and discipline
Reduce financial pressure
Improve student confidence
Strengthen cooperation between students and administration
4. Constructive Dialogue
We understand that the current policy was implemented as part of broader institutional reforms. We do not seek to oppose the administration or its leadership. Instead, we respectfully ask for reconsideration of this specific aspect in light of student realities.
Our request is simple and moderate:
Increase the permitted hair length from 1.5 cm to 5 cm, while maintaining expectations of hygiene and professionalism.
We believe this adjustment aligns with the university’s principles while creating a more supportive and practical environment for students.
We respectfully invite the university leadership to view this request as constructive feedback from students who care deeply about both discipline and fairness. Together, we can uphold high standards while also ensuring that policies remain practical and considerate of student circumstances.
