Request to Assam Government to recognise Jamunamukh-Kampur as ‘elephant crossing corridor’
The Issue
Growing up surrounded by the beautiful forests of Assam, India, was a magical experience. As children, we were lucky to witness majestic elephants in their natural habitat. These gentle giants were an integral part of our natural surroundings, and observing them in their natural habitat instilled in us a deep sense of wonder and respect for wildlife.
However, a recent tragedy has shaken our community and reminded us of the responsibility we hold towards these magnificent creatures. In a heart-wrenching incident, eight wild elephants, including a number of calves, met their untimely demise when they were struck by a train near our village, between Jamunamukh and Kampur in Hojai District. This tragic event brought the issue of human encroachment and infrastructural development impacting wildlife to the forefront.
The path between Jamunamukh and Kampur is a known but unrecognised corridor used by elephants, but due to modernisation and lack of proper recognition, these corridors are becoming increasingly dangerous for them. We urge the Government in Assam/ Indian Railways/ Indian Government to take immediate action by officially recognising the Jamunamukh-Kampur path as an "Elephant Crossing Corridor" to prevent further loss of wildlife lives.
Taking this first important step will not only help safeguard the elephants but also pave the way for further initiatives to ensure their safety. We propose considering the construction of an underpass beneath the railway tracks where the elephants frequently cross. This could significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Additionally, halting any further encroachment on forest lands can provide these creatures the safe habitat they deserve.
Our earth is shared among countless species, not just humans. As compassionate beings, it is our duty to protect those who cannot protect themselves. The railway tracks, though beneficial to us, pose significant risks to wildlife. Let us play our part in harmonising development with conservation.
We call on the Government in Assam/ Indian Railways/ Indian Government and concerned authorities to recognise the importance of this issue and take decisive steps to address it. With your support, we can create a safer world for elephants and many other species that call our forests home.
Please sign this petition to urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action. Together, we can ensure a future where humans and wild elephants can coexist in harmony. Thank you for your support.
