The Issue

I am a street dog rescuer and feeder, and every day, I face the heart-wrenching task of ensuring these vulnerable animals survive. Living in constant fear for their safety and my own, I'm deeply disturbed by the Supreme Court of India's recent order impacting those who feed and care for strays. Like many others, I have dedicated my life to rescuing and feeding street dogs, providing them with the care and attention they desperately need. Our work is not just a hobby; it's a compassionate commitment to protect these innocent lives.

The recent ruling by the Supreme Court has made it increasingly difficult for feeders to continue their vital work. The decision has inadvertently exposed us to harassment, targeting, and sometimes violence from those who oppose our activities. This not only threatens the welfare of the strays but also endangers the feeders who selflessly dedicate their time and resources to help these dogs in need. Our right to engage in charitable activities is being challenged, and the strays, who rely on us, are left at even greater risk.

It is a fact that street dogs play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance. They help in controlling the population of rodents and other pests. According to estimates by animal welfare organizations, India has around 35 million stray dogs. These animals often live in harsh conditions, lacking basic necessities like food and shelter. Feeding causes no harm; rather, it is an act of kindness that benefits society at large.

We urge the Supreme Court of India to revise its order and provide legal protection to feeders and animal welfare volunteers across the country. We propose creating a legal framework or guidelines that safeguard the rights and safety of those who care for street animals. This should include protection from harassment, a clear demarcation of areas within cities and towns where feeding is permitted, and penalties for those who harm or threaten human caretakers.

By signing this petition, you join the call for justice and compassion. You will be making a difference in the lives of countless strays and the individuals committed to their welfare. Your signature is not just support; it is a stand against cruelty and an appeal for humane solutions. Let us work together to save the strays of India and protect the people who are devoted to safeguarding them. Sign this petition today, and help bring about the change we desperately need.
