The Issue

In Kinston, and throughout Lenoir County, the situation with stray animals is dire. As an animal lover and someone who witnesses the struggle firsthand, it hurts to see shelters, rescue coordinators, and animal control pushed to their limits. The sight of stray animals wandering the streets in search of food and shelter is a daily reminder of the growing crisis. Our community is rich in compassion and has always celebrated the joy animals bring to our lives. However, this compassion must now extend to action as the stray animal population reaches unbearable levels.

We need additional funding to assist with TNR which is Trap, Neuter, Return.  Animal Welfare is about preventing suffering and we are failing.  We need spay and neuter ordinances.  We need a low cost clinic to spay and neuter at affordable prices, for exams, vaccinations, deworming, heartworm prevention flea and tick treatment and euthanasia.  Not only are the strays a concern, there are the owner surrenders that are in dire medical need.

Stray animals face numerous challenges including starvation, disease, and exposure to harsh weather conditions. In addition, they pose challenges to public safety and health, such as increased traffic accidents and the spread of zoonotic diseases. Kinston and Lenoir County must join forces to address this urgent issue together.

Therefore, we urge the City of Kinston and Lenoir County to allocate funds and resources towards a sustainable solution for managing and reducing the stray animal population. Establishing comprehensive spay and neuter programs, increasing the capacity of animal shelters, and funding community education initiatives are vital steps.

With the right support, including financial assistance, volunteers, and broader community engagement, we can improve the quality of life for these animals and relieve the burden on our already overwhelmed shelters and rescue coordinators.

By signing this petition, you support our call to the City of Kinston and Lenoir County officials to take immediate and effective action to help our community and its vulnerable animal residents. Let us show our dedication to making Kinston a safe and compassionate place for all its inhabitants, both human and animal alike. Please sign and share this petition today!
