The Issue

The Council of McNab/Braeside has recently initiated a Pilot Program that consolidates the Committee of the Whole with the regular Council meetings, thereby unilaterally changing the Regular Council meeting start time from 6:00 pm to 9:30 am. The Pilot will be evaluated by Staff, a report will be submitted to Council in late May, and Council will consider next steps. So far, questions to Council in regard to constituents' participation in the decision-making process have not elicited a favourable response.

The decision to change the Regular Council meeting time from evening to morning was made without any consultation of residents and taxpayers, whose lives and daily routines are directly impacted by such changes. The new meeting schedule may pose significant challenges for many community members in regard to attendance, participation, and engagement, especially for those who work traditional hours, have care-giving responsibilities, or cannot attend during the newly set time. Ensuring accessibility, transparency, accountability and participation in local government is crucial for maintaining a vibrant community and a democratic process that truly represents everyone. A failure to do so could disenfranchise many community members and potentially erode trust between the Council and its constituents.

Municipal Council meetings are the cornerstone of local democracy.  They are the primary, transparent, and democratic venue for local government decision-making, where elected officials debate and vote on budgets, policies, by-laws, and municipal and community services. They ensure transparency, allow public participation, and provide accountability for decisions affecting the local quality of life.

Local government must be inclusive and transparent. Therefore, it is vital to involve all affected parties in discussions over schedules and formats for Council meetings. By holding consultations, feedback sessions, and possibly adjusting meeting times to more accessible hours, we can ensure collective input and foster a community where voices are heard and considered.

We, the undersigned, call on the Council of McNab/Braeside to prioritize resident engagement and thoroughly consult the community before making any permanent decisions and possibly long-term changes to the previous Council meeting times. Signing this petition is a step towards ensuring our voices are acknowledged and our community’s needs are met.
