Request Shelbyville to maintain the drainage creek regularly

The Issue

My kids (2.5 and 4 mos.)  get 10-15 mosquito bites in less than 10 minutes when going outside. It's heartbreaking to see them covered in bites, itching, and uncomfortable every time they try to enjoy some fresh air. The root of the problem lies in the drainage creek adjacent to Evans Park, Shelbyville, Tennessee. Due to the lack of routine maintenance, the creek has become overgrown with weeds and often stands with water, creating an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. This problem not only affects my family but the entire community, posing health risks, particularly to children and the elderly.

Standing water in neglected drainage canals is a serious issue, as it leads to the proliferation of mosquitoes, which are known vectors for several diseases, including West Nile virus and Zika virus. The elderly, children, and those with compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable to these diseases, and in this community, every resident deserves to feel safe from preventable health risks. Moreover, the persistence of this mosquito problem could negatively impact the annual horse show, a vital cultural and economic event for Shelbyville.

We are calling upon the city of Shelbyville to take action by conducting routine maintenance on the drainage creek next to Evans Park, at least twice a year. This would include essential tasks like pulling weeds, clearing debris, and ensuring that water flows freely through the drainage canal. Such measures are not only preventive but necessary to protect public health and uphold community wellbeing.

Routine maintenance of the drainage creek is a realistic, actionable solution that can drastically reduce the mosquito population by eliminating stagnant water—a crucial step in ensuring that our children can safely play outside, and residents can enjoy the outdoor spaces Shelbyville offers. We need your support to urge the city council to prioritize this issue, allocate resources, and implement these changes.

Please sign this petition to let your voice be heard. Help ensure a safer, healthier environment for our community, so we can continue to thrive and enjoy all that Shelbyville has to offer, without the constant nuisance and health threat of excessive mosquitoes. Your signature can make a difference.
