The Issue
Every day, I pass through the intersection of State Route 35 and Free Pike/Main Street, haunted by the memories of lives lost there. This is personal to me because I have witnessed the aftermath of several tragic accidents that have claimed lives or left survivors with life-altering injuries.
The intersection's design has contributed to its notoriety as a dangerous spot. With its current structure, it has become a perilous crossing point, leading to a significant number of traffic fatalities. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has a responsibility to ensure the safety of our roads, and it is clear that changes need to happen to protect the community.
Research conducted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) shows that roundabouts reduce the types of crashes involving injuries and fatalities by approximately 78-82%. In particular, roundabouts have been proven to significantly decrease T-bone and head-on collisions, which are prevalent and highly dangerous forms of accidents that occur at busy intersections like 35 & Free Pike/Main St.
Implementing a roundabout at this location could greatly improve traffic flow and reduce the likelihood of high-severity collisions. It is a proactive and proven solution that could save lives. Furthermore, roundabouts offer environmental benefits by reducing vehicle idling and improving fuel efficiency, which contributes to a reduction in air pollution.
ODOT has successfully installed roundabouts at other intersections across Ohio, resulting in enhanced road safety and traffic efficiency. It is imperative that 35 & Free Pike/Main St. receives the same attention to prevent further loss of life.
By signing this petition, you are urging the Ohio Department of Transportation to prioritize public safety by installing a roundabout at this dangerous intersection. Let us come together to make our roads safer and honor those affected by advocating for preventive measures. Please lend your support and add your voice to this crucial cause.
