The Issue

Many parents face challenges when it comes to ensuring that our young children stay adequately hydrated. In particular, many children do not like the taste of water on its own, which can result in insufficient fluid intake during the day. This is especially important given the fact that proper hydration is crucial for children’s growth, health, and overall well-being.

This issue is particularly pertinent for children with autistic tendencies who may be perceived as "picky" but in reality have sensory sensitivities that affect their beverage preferences. The rule imposed by Ofsted disallowing sugar-free squash at nurseries poses a significant barrier for these children. While the intention behind the rule may have good intentions, it doesn't consider the diverse needs of children who struggle with drinking plain water.

Sugar-free squash, when used correctly, can be a palatable and safe alternative for children. It provides the necessary flavors without the added sugars associated with health concerns such as tooth decay and obesity. Not only does it encourage children to drink more fluids, but it also aligns with healthier lifestyle choices.

Research shows that good hydration can affect cognitive functions, mood, and energy levels, which are critical for active young minds at nursery. By reassessing the ban on sugar-free squash, Ofsted could accommodate a greater range of children’s needs, promoting inclusion and supporting the developmental needs of every child.

We kindly request that Ofsted reconsider this ruling and allow nurseries the flexibility to offer sugar-free squash as a viable option for children. This straightforward change could make a world of difference for young children who have particular hydration needs, and would allow parents some peace of mind knowing their child’s needs are being adequately met.

Please sign this petition to show your support for revisiting this policy and prioritizing our children's hydration and health. Together, we can make nurseries a more inclusive environment for all children.
