Request for Review of School Uniform Policy and Inclusion of Fleece Jumper

Request for Review of School Uniform Policy and Inclusion of Fleece Jumper
The Issue
Tuesday 6th August, 2024
To the St Ignatius School Board,
As concerned parents of students attending St Ignatius School, we kindly request a review of the current school uniform policy this school term i.e.: to expedite the review of the uniform policy. We believe that revisiting this policy will benefit both the students and the school community as a whole.
Our primary concern centres around the absence of a fleece jumper as part of the official uniform coupled with the unsuitability of the current woollen jersey. As the weather turns colder, students need appropriate attire to stay warm during outdoor activities and travel to and from school. A fleece jumper would provide a practical and comfortable option for our children.
We propose the following considerations:
1. Consultation with Parents: We request that parents be actively involved in the decision-making process and a survey link to be issued to the school community. The survey would include questions relating to the full uniform to gather more specific feedback and suggestions across the various items and their quality and practicality.
Their insights and feedback are invaluable, as they directly experience the impact of uniform choices on their children.
2. Inclusion of a Fleece Jumper: We urge the School Board to consider adding a fleece jumper to the official uniform. We believe the addition of a fleece jumper would be a positive enhancement to our school's uniform policy and the benefits to be:
- Warmth and Comfort: Fleece is a highly effective insulator, which would help keep students warm without adding excessive bulk and layers of clothing. This would be particularly beneficial during outdoor activities and when transitioning between classrooms. There is strong feedback from many children that do not wear the current woollen jersey as it is uncomfortable and 'scratchy'.
- Durability and Practicality: Fleece is known for its durability and ease of maintenance. It is resistant to wear and tear, which is ideal for the daily activities of school children. They are also easy to wash and quick to dry, adding to their practicality for families.
- Balancing Tradition and Practicality: While we appreciate the school’s commitment to tradition, we believe it is essential to strike a balance between tradition and practicality. A fleece jumper aligns with modern expectations and ensures the well-being of our students.
- Affordability: We understand that uniform costs can be a concern for some families. Fleece jumpers are generally cost-effective, making them an affordable option for parents.
We appreciate the School Board’s dedication to maintaining a positive school identity and fostering a sense of belonging.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to a thoughtful review and hope for a favourable outcome that benefits our children.
Sincerely,
