Request for Leniency in Sentencing Robert S Pierce Jr

The Issue

When our loved one slipped into the abyss of substance abuse and homelessness, it marked the beginning of a journey that has led us to this challenging intersection of law and humanity. This person we know as a kind and loving father, now faces harsh sentencing due to actions fueled not by criminal intent but by the devastating claws of addiction - a stark departure from their normal behavior.

The Sentencing Project estimates that over 65% of the U.S. prison population has an active addiction, yet only 11% receive any form of treatment during their incarceration (Sentencing Project, 2021). Furthermore, a report from the National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University establishes that imprisonment, without adequate treatment and rehabilitation, only exacerbates recidivism rates.

Keeping in view the aforementioned data, we respectfully request the judge presiding over this case to consider leniency. We recognize the gravity of the crimes committed, but firmly believe that an emphasis on rehabilitation and support, rather than strict punitive measures, not only aligns better with the principles of justice but also holds a promise for long-term societal benefits.

Every signature is a step forward. A step closer to a just world, where our systems respond to addiction with empathy and rehabilitation, not severe punitive measures. Sign our petition today and let us raise our voices for those who need us the most.
