request for leadership resignation
The Issue
Petition to the Mayor of Fauquier-Strickland
Request for the Resignation of Mayor Madeleine Tremblay
To the Honorable Madeleine Tremblay,
Mayor of Fauquier-Strickland
20 Doyon St,
Fauquier-Strickland, ON P0L 1G0
Petition Regarding Township Financial Crisis
We, the undersigned residents of Fauquier-Strickland, hereby submit this petition to express our grave concern over the township’s ongoing financial crisis and to respectfully request your resignation as Mayor.
Background and Concerns
• The recent announcement of a $2.5 million operating deficit, along with the
potential cessation of all municipal services by August 1, 2025, has caused
widespread distress and uncertainty within our community.
• Reports indicate persistent financial challenges for the township over several years to come, worsened by overspending, underfunding, and depleted municipal reserves.
• There has been a lack of clear, proactive leadership and absence of a concrete plan to address the deficit and stabilize township finances.
• Proposed property tax increases of 190 to 230 percent represent an unsustainable burden for residents, particularly those on fixed incomes. Discussions of a 300% tax increase has been brought to the tax payers attention. These numbers are 7 times the province average. These tax rates are not sustainable for residents. It suggests that $5,168 per household would be the average tax rate per household in this small community where over half of the residents are retired and or on a fixed income.
• Layoffs of municipal staff and the potential discontinuation of essential services such as waste management and road maintenance threaten the well-being and stability of Fauquier-Strickland.
Request for Leadership Change. While we acknowledge the inherent difficulties in managing a small municipality with a limited tax base, we believe that effective leadership requires transparency, accountability, and decisive action that we have yet to experience with this leadership.
The ongoing persistence of these financial difficulties—publicly noted as unresolved for nearly a decade—has eroded community trust in our local government.
In light of these circumstances, we respectfully urge you to step down from your position as Mayor. We believe that new leadership is necessary to restore public confidence, address the urgent needs of our township, and guide Fauquier-Strickland toward a more sustainable and financially responsible future.
Closing
Thank you for your years of service to Fauquier-Strickland. We sincerely hope you will consider this request in the best interests of our community.
Sincerely,
