Request for Fair Pickup and Drop-Off Rules for Uber and Lyft Drivers in Metro Vancouver

Request for Fair Pickup and Drop-Off Rules for Uber and Lyft Drivers in Metro Vancouver
The Issue
We, the undersigned rideshare drivers and community members of Metro Vancouver, respectfully request that local municipalities introduce fair and practical pickup and drop-off rules for rideshare drivers operating on platforms such as Uber and Lyft.
Rideshare drivers provide an essential transportation service for residents, tourists, seniors, workers, and people with mobility needs. Every day, drivers are required to pick up and drop off passengers at curbside locations designated by the app or requested by passengers. In many areas of Metro Vancouver, there are no designated loading zones available, and drivers are forced to briefly stop at the nearest safe curb location.
However, current bylaws often treat brief passenger pickups the same as parking violations. Drivers are frequently ticketed even when stopping for less than one minute, remaining inside their vehicle, and actively loading passengers or luggage. In many cases, signage is unclear, poorly positioned, or not visible from the roadway, making compliance difficult or impossible.
This creates an unfair working environment for rideshare drivers who are simply trying to do their jobs safely and responsibly. It also discourages efficient transportation and increases congestion when drivers are forced to circle blocks looking for legal stopping zones that may not exist.
We respectfully ask all Metro Vancouver municipalities to consider:
• Creating designated rideshare pickup and drop-off zones in busy areas
• Allowing short-duration curbside stops for active passenger loading
• Improving signage visibility and placement
• Introducing clear, consistent bylaws across all cities
• Training enforcement officers on rideshare pickup realities
Rideshare services are now a permanent part of Vancouver’s transportation system. City rules must evolve to reflect modern transportation needs.
We ask city leaders to work with rideshare companies and drivers to create fair, practical, and enforceable regulations that improve safety, reduce congestion, and support the people who keep the city moving.
Respectfully,
Metro Vancouver Rideshare Drivers
