The issue

The decision by Campion College Australia to name a hall after George Pell is deeply unsettling and contradictory to societal expectations. Despite being unanimously convicted of child sexual abuse by two juries, the college has chosen to ignore this grave controversy, effectively dismissing the experiences of abuse survivors and victims of the Catholic Church's scandals. I care deeply about supporting victims of abuse, and the accountability of religious institutions should not differ from broader societal expectations.

The choice to honour a figure potentially guilty of such heinous acts, including child sexual abuse, sends a troubling message to current and future generations. It seems to devalue the lived realities of survivors and stands as an affront to those who have been affected by such crimes. This decision undermines efforts to support and uplift individuals who have bravely come forward with their stories.

Furthermore, the catholic schools' ongoing discrimination towards LGBTQI+ students and staff only increases concerns about their commitments to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all. Society today demands higher moral accountability from educational and religious institutions, and such actions seemingly disrespect those who have suffered greatly.

For the sake of justice, integrity, and compassion, I urge Campion College to reconsider and reverse their decision to name the hall after George Pell. The credibility of the institution is at stake, and more importantly, the well-being and dignity of survivors deserve to be prioritized. Please join me in calling for this important change. Sign this petition to demonstrate our collective support for victims and to hold institutions accountable for their actions.
