The Issue

As a dedicated educator who has committed countless extra hours beyond the standard school year, working a contract that is longer than 180 days, it is disheartening to discover that I am only receiving one credit year towards my retirement. My story is not unique; it resonates with numerous other educators who find themselves in similar situations across Ohio. Despite our dedication and extended service, the current system does not fairly recognize our additional time and effort when it comes to calculating service credits for retirement.

Currently, the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio) provides a straight-line calculation for retirement credits, where even those of us who work extended contracts receive the same credit as those who meet the basic 180-day contractual requirements. This approach does not accurately reflect the true extent of service provided by educators who frequently work additional days, often at the expense of their personal time and family commitments.

Ohio prides itself on having a robust educational system supported by dedicated teachers. However, the current credit system inadvertently de-incentivizes educators from taking on extended contracts, which can be essential for meeting student needs, managing administrative tasks, or participating in additional programs that benefit educational outcomes.

We urge STRS Ohio, the Ohio General Assembly, and policymakers responsible for public employee retirement systems to conduct a formal review and actuarial study of the current prorated service credit system. The goal of this review should be to identify fair adjustments that reflect the additional service educators provide. Potential solutions might include:
- Establishing a more proportional credit system that accounts for the number of days worked beyond the standard contract.
- Implementing a tiered system where educators with extended contracts earn additional credits reflective of their extra contributions.
- Consulting with educators and retirement specialists to design a system that rewards extended service fairly and equitably.

As educators, our commitment goes beyond the classroom; it shapes the future of Ohio. It is vital to support a retirement system that recognizes and rewards this commitment adequately.

Join us in calling for this critical review to ensure fairness and accuracy in service credit calculations, sign the petition to help bring about this necessary change. Together, we can ensure that Ohio's educators receive the acknowledgment and compensation they deserve for their extended service.
