The Issue

Claiborne County residents care deeply about the future of our community and how we are represented. Many citizens have begun asking an important question: does our current commission district structure still reflect the needs of our population today?

Publicly available data shows Claiborne County has a population of roughly 32,000 residents, with noticeable differences between commission districts. Some districts represent several thousand residents, while others — including areas like Clairfield — have far smaller populations. At the same time, Claiborne County currently operates with 21 county commissioners, and the proposed FY 2025–2026 budget allocates approximately $190,000 toward the county commission.

These facts are not presented as criticism, but as context for a reasonable and respectful question: should our current structure be reviewed to ensure balanced representation and long-term sustainability?

Many Tennessee counties with similar populations operate with fewer commission districts while still maintaining strong local representation. Preliminary community-led comparisons suggest it may be possible to create more population-balanced districts while preserving a voice for smaller and rural communities.

This petition is not about targeting any individual officeholder. It is about encouraging a thoughtful, transparent review process so residents can better understand how our county government is structured and whether modernization should be considered.

We are respectfully asking for:
• A public review of Claiborne County’s current commission district structure
• Open discussion and transparency around districting and representation
• Consideration of redistricting or structural updates if supported by data and community input
• Coordination with state leadership if legislative action is required

Claiborne County deserves forward-thinking leadership and transparent governance. A formal review is a responsible first step toward ensuring our local government reflects both today’s realities and the needs of future generations.

If you believe in transparency, fairness, and thoughtful planning for our county’s future, please consider signing and sharing.
