PLASTIC STATISTICS FOR BETTER FUTURE

The Issue

Many solutions have been thought of not only by the government, but also by the citizens itself. From simply using paperbags instead of plastics, to not using any kinds of plastics at all. This is because plastic pollution has been getting worse, destroying the lands, the oceans, the rivers, and the people itself.

Plastic pollution is plastics where it shouldnt be. It is everywhere and causing harm along the way. Every year, over 300 million tons of plastic are produced, half of which is used to design single-use items such as shopping bags, cups and straws. Current estimates show that at last 8 million pieces of plastic are entering the oceans every single day. Additionally, Approximately 51 trillion microscopic pieces of plastic, weighing 269,000 tons. That is about the same as 1345 adult blue whales. And 500 times the number of stars in our galaxy.

Animals are dying and according to research 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die each yearwhen they become trapped in plastic or eat it, perhaps mistaking it for a tasty treat. At least two thirds of the world’s fish stocks are suffering from plastic ingestion.

With the largest population, China produced the largest quantity of plastic, at nearly 60 million tonnes. This was followed by the United States at 38 million, Germany at 14.5 million and Brazil at 12 million tonnes.

Plastic affect many people, not only the consumers but plastic  also affects the environment and animals. We are affected by plastic because we all dispose of them incorrectly and because we are unaware of the consequences of using plastic. Research shows that “It takes 500-1,000 years for plastic to degrade” this means the plastic we use isn’t really going away anytime soon. The amount of plastic bags we use is important because once we throw the plastic  away they will just pile up and create pollution, which is harmful to the environment because how we dispose of the plastic  isn’t really going to help due to the amount of time it takes for them to decompose. Something important to know is that “50 percent of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away” this should be taken into consideration because the plastic bags are just being used once then thrown away, this contributes to the pollution being created. This is how we are affected by the use of plastic.

"We are being choked to death by the amount of plastic that we throw away. It's killing our oceans. It's entering into our bodies in the fish we eat."-Kevin Bacon
