Replacing the Speed Bumps to Speed Humps

Replacing the Speed Bumps to Speed Humps
The Issue
Speed bumps are often used in areas where traffic control is needed for safety of children like at our Tot Lot here in the Cascade Neighborhood in Two Rivers, private driveways, and parking lots to slow down cars and improve overall safety. Speed bumps that are used in parking lots and driveways are different than those that are commonly used in residential areas. Parking lots and driveways speed bumps are very steep these are the type that have been installed on Spanish Oaks. These are not meant for use on residential roads as identified by a resident’s inquiry to the county for the reasons listed below and many more:
· They are very uncomfortable for drivers, especially those with medical conditions like bad backs and even pregnancy which some residents have already expressed experiencing issues with the current speed bumps.
· These speed bumps cannot be traversed by any other vehicles but cars. Bikes, scooters, skateboards, roller skates and even smaller motorized vehicles like motorcycles cannot go over these steep speed bumps. So, people are forced to go on the sidewalk to get around them or in another direction.
· They can damage cars suspension and undercarriage even if you go slowly over them because they don’t have a gradual incline.
· They cause noise pollution from cars going over top what is the equivalent of a curb and landing hard on the other side.
· An increase in traffic has already been identified with people going in other directions to avoid the speed bumps. Which might be ideal for some those that live on Spanish Oaks and Quarry Circle but not to residents on the adjoining streets.
· They are also an eyesore for our beautiful community. These ugly and cheap speed bumps can be purchased on Amazon for $198.16. We deserve to have residential speed bumps built into the road like in every other nice neighborhood in Maryland.
Residential neighborhood speed bumps/humps on the other hand, are just as effective for providing safety for children crossing to the Tot Lot but don’t have any of the negative issues identified with the current speed bumps. They are designed to slow down traffic gradually, encourage drivers to stop at the stop signs and stay within the speed limit, while also eliminating the negative impacts.
Our goal is to advocate for the replacement of the current speed bumps with residential neighborhood speed bumps/humps that are less steep. We aim to gather as many signatures as possible to demonstrate to the HOA that there is a strong support for this initiative.
By signing this petition, you are showing your support for the implementation of residential neighborhood speed bumps/humps on Spanish Oaks. We will present this petition to the HOA and urge them to consider this solution as an alternative to the current speed bumps we.
Let’s work together to make this area safe for the children at the Tot Lot, accessible to everyone and more esthetically appealing by removing the speed bumps that are currently installed and replacing them with something suitable for our community.
