The Issue

The Bank of England has announced that British Wildlife will be used on future denominations of Sterling notes.

The Bank has selected a panel of experts, to choose which wildlife will be used.

But the panel is overwhelmingly biased towards animals.

Plants, including Mosses and other Bryophytes, form the basis of most UK ecosystems. We also have an international responsibility to protect our Mosses, because so many threatened species are found here.

Mosses - specifically Sphagnum or Bog-mosses, are also our single most important way of capturing and storing carbon in the UK, in our peatlands.

Illustrating the new Five Pound Note with a Bog-moss, will raise awareness of the beauty of mosses, the critical roles they play in our environment, and how important it is for us to protect and cherish them.
