The Issue

In our Buckingham Heights neighborhood, the main sewer line is terracotta, a material that's not only outdated but prone to frequent failures. In the past five years alone, I've personally endured three sewer backups that resulted in substantial damages to my property. Along with me, three of my neighbors have faced similar situations, forcing us to spend thousands of dollars in repairs. Each rainfall brings anxiety and fear that sewage might invade our homes, a problem that is not just costly but also presents serious sanitary risks.

Terracotta pipes, first used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are known for their brittleness and susceptibility to root intrusions and weather-related damage. Many cities across the United States have acknowledged these issues and proactively replaced their sewer systems with more durable and modern alternatives. Sadly, it seems our county has not prioritized addressing this critical infrastructure problem, putting residents at risk.

Evidence of the failures of terracotta pipes can be seen across communities similar to Buckingham Heights. According to reports from the Environmental Protection Agency, aging sewer systems in the U.S. have resulted in thousands of sewage overflows annually, affecting both property and the environment. Wilmington should not become part of these alarming statistics.

It's time for the New Castle County authorities to take action. We are calling on the relevant departments to initiate a project to replace the terracotta sewer lines with materials that can withstand modern-day demands. Materials like PVC or HDPE are known for their durability and have been successfully used in other municipalities to solve similar problems.

The community cannot bear the risk of continuous sanitation issues, property damage, and health hazards. With a planned overhaul of the sewer system, not only do we prevent sewage backups, but we also safeguard the environment and improve the quality of life for all residents.

Stand with me and my neighbors in urging the Wilmington County officials to prioritize the replacement of our archaic terracotta sewer lines. Sign this petition to demand action and ensure a safe and secure environment for all of us.
