The Issue
This is a petition to remove Sodexo from campus and choose a different food provider. Sodexo owns private prisons and immigrant detention centers in the UK and Australia in which there have been instances of sexual assault from prison guards. There have also been instances of inmate death in the prisons. I will link all the articles to these below. Immigration centers are racist and not appropriate for the college to participate in through Sodexo. We should not be allowing that on our campus. Next the food is simply unhealthy. Students and teachers are being negatively affected physically, and mentally by continually being forced to dine here. Other school staff as well. Pizza and processed meat sandwiches are not nutritious for the body. The food is often bland and without dressing. There is often pasta and no cheese for it for instance. These are not enjoyable meals. It is also not nutritious to skip meals, which is often what happens because the dining hall, multiple times a week, runs out of food and puts it away at or before 6:30 pm. Students may not have to transportation or money to buy themselves dinner when this happens. In many instances students do not have a choice about being on the meal plan. I provided links a school in California who decided to remove Sodexo, before the contract with them was even finished. For example : " It’s not every day that you decide to build a campaign to force an administration to drop a multi-million dollar contract with a billion-dollar corporate global behemoth, and then make it happen. Through our organizing, we made Scripps drop Sodexo, necessitating that social justice values be applied to major financial decisions in the process." This is possible and we as a student body have the power to do this. If you are wondering what we would replace Sodexo with there is a meal provider called Compass Group. you can google the company. There is also plenty of other options. You may be worried about the people who work for Sodexo and what is next for them. Here is a direct quote from the 3rd article I linked. "All current Sodexo employees will have the opportunity to remain in their current roles, with compensation that is equal or better to what they receive now, according to the University."
