The Issue

Abigail Scott Duniway is a personal hero of mine. Her relentless fight for women's rights has inspired me to pursue a career in civil rights law to advocate for women. Ensuring her legacy is honored where it truly belongs is a cause close to my heart.

Oregon has been a state of pioneers, and among those transforming figures, Abigail Scott Duniway shines brightly. Known as "Oregon's Mother of Equal Suffrage," Duniway dedicated her life to fighting for women's suffrage and was instrumental in Oregon women gaining the right to vote in 1912, eight years before the 19th Amendment was law. She started Oregon's first newspaper dedicated to women's rights, The New Northwest, and worked tirelessly alongside national suffrage movement leaders.

Reverend Jason Lee's contributions to Oregon are undeniable, but it's time modern Oregonians reflect on and celebrate the progressive heroes who fought for equality and justice. Duniway's efforts paved the way for a more inclusive state, and honoring her with a statue in the National Statuary Hall Collection would acknowledge her indispensable role in Oregon's history.

The National Statuary Hall Collection allows each state to honor two prominent figures. We propose to replace the statue of Reverend Jason Lee with that of Abigail Scott Duniway. This change represents not only a symbolic shift but recognizes the immense social strides made possible by Duniway's perseverance. States like California and Wisconsin have honored women such as Helen Keller and Frances Willard, setting precedents for inclusion and diversity; it’s time Oregon follows this path.

Replacing Lee's statue with one of Duniway will serve as a powerful reminder of equality, determination, and the ongoing struggle for women's rights. This petition calls on the Oregon State Legislature and Statuary Hall Selection Committee to initiate this meaningful change, uplifting the legacy of women who transformed society.

Sign this petition to ensure Abigail Scott Duniway's legacy continues to inspire future generations and to visibly represent Oregon’s commitment to equality and progress in the nation's heart.
