The Issue

As a parent of a child attending Laurel County Public Schools, I've become increasingly concerned over the use of Lifetouch Photography for our children's school photos. While capturing the moments of our children’s lives is important, it is equally essential to ensure their safety, privacy, and the support of our local community.

Lifetouch Photography is a large national company that is often chosen for its established reputation and convenience. However, these factors should not overshadow the potential benefits of choosing local photographers. Local photographers are part of our community, understand the individual needs of our schools, and are often more flexible to accommodate special requests pertaining to each school’s unique environment.

Moreover, employing local photographers not only supports our community’s economy but also gives us more control over how our children’s images are managed and stored. Concerns over data privacy and the management of students' personal information have become increasingly significant in today’s digital age. By choosing local options, parents and schools can more easily address these concerns directly with the people handling the photos, rather than dealing with a distant corporate office.

Additionally, utilizing local talent can sometimes result in more personalized photos that reflect our children’s personalities more vividly. Local photographers have the advantage of being familiar with the schools and the local culture, thus they can capture more authentic and meaningful photographs.

Making this change is not only about safeguarding our children but also about empowering our community. By signing this petition, we are urging the Laurel County Public Schools to reevaluate their current contract with Lifetouch Photography and consider the possibility of partnering with local photographers for future school photography needs. Let’s unite to foster a safer, more community-oriented approach to school photography. Your support is essential.

Please sign this petition to push for a positive change in our community and ensure that our children’s school photography experience is secure, supportive, and special.
