Replace Callery Pear Trees in Our Town with Native Colorado Tree Species
Replace Callery Pear Trees in Our Town with Native Colorado Tree Species
The Issue
Too many of us in our town know the annual struggle related to the Callery Pear Trees. We live with foul-smelling flowers blanketing the streets and the messy aftermath when birds eat the berries and spread seeds, causing even more Callery Pear Trees to grow. This species, non-native to our region, becomes a fragrant nuisance and a disruptive invader, proliferating in our local rivers and streams.
Callery Pear, also known as Bradford Pear, seems harmless but is a menace to our local environment as they spread to roadside ditches, taking over the banks of our rivers and streams, literally changing the face of our home. Many people do not realize that the unique smell of these trees resemble a wide range of putrid odors, from rotting fish to sperm.
Importantly, there are native and ecologically friendly solutions at hand such as replacing these invasive species with trees native to Colorado, such as Aspens, Rocky Mountain Maples, or Cottonwoods. These local trees have adapted to our climate, support the local fauna and flora, and do not carry the issues associated with the Callery Pear. They are a symbol of our pride in Colorado.
In the interest of our environment, our comfort, and the uniqueness of our town, it is time we replace the Callery Pear trees throughout the town with native Aspens, Rocky Mountain Maples, or Cottonwood trees. It is a call for change, a call for preservation of local diversity, and a call for the true smell of Colorado to return.
Please, sign this petition and support the replacement of invasive Callery Pear trees with our native species. Let's restore the true essence of Colorado. Make a difference! Sign today.
