The Issue

Every day, I use the zebra crossing on Beckfield Lane near The Green Tree public house to take my children to school. I am horrified by what I witness daily — cars failing to stop or coming to abrupt halts because they simply cannot see us waiting to cross. The massive trees on either side of the crossing and its poor visibility and upkeep contribute to this dangerous situation.

In one incident, I watched a car crash into the back of another vehicle, and on an icy morning, a car skidded onto the crossing. These are not isolated events but part of far too many near misses. It is a pressing issue that needs resolving before something more serious, or even tragic, occurs.

The current zebra crossing is no longer sufficient for Beckfield Lane, a busy road frequented by children traveling to and from local schools, residents, and patrons of nearby establishments. The inadequate visibility due to overgrown trees and lack of routine maintenance jeopardizes the safety of all pedestrians.

Therefore, we/I the undersigned call the City of York Council to take immediate action by replacing the outdated zebra crossing with a safer, more effective push button crossing. This change would ensure that vehicles are required to stop, thereby granting pedestrians a secure passageway. With a push button crossing, we can significantly enhance the safety of the crossing, providing peace of mind to parents, residents, and all road users.
