The Issue

As a parent, I have always been conscious of the words my child learns in their formative years. When my child brought home their first Hindi alphabet book, I was taken aback to find that the example used for the letter ‘Au’ was “Aurat.” While language evolves naturally, certain words carry cultural and societal connotations that may not be appropriate or constructive for young children.

In Hindi, "Aurat" translates to "woman," but it holds varied implications depending on its context. In numerous instances, this term is used in a derogatory manner, subtly instilling archaic stereotypes that I do not wish my child to adopt. Children at a young age are impressionable and often absorb the social nuances delivered through language. Therefore, it's crucial that the language we teach them fosters respect, neutrality, and positivity.

I propose that educational authorities replace "Au se Aurat" with more child-suitable and neutral examples in beginner Hindi alphabet books, such as “Aushadhi” (herbal medicine) or “Auzaar” (tool). These words introduce children to broader concepts without unintended negative connotations, encouraging a more inclusive and positive learning experience.

Data from a 2022 educational report indicates that language used in early education significantly impacts cognitive and social development in children. Implementing language that is inclusive and non-gendered can help in fostering gender equity from a young age.

Moreover, revisions in educational materials have been successfully implemented in other countries to eliminate language that perpetuates stereotypes. The Ontario Ministry of Education, for instance, updated their primary school curriculum to rid learning materials of sexist language - a change that was well-received by educators and parents alike.

We are not just asking for a change in terminology but for the creation of learning environments that respect differences and educate children without biases. By joining hands, we can advocate for educational amendments that align with our vision of an egalitarian society.

I urge all parents, educators, and concerned citizens to join me in this quest for change. Let us collectively request the educational boards to make this important modification in child education to promote a more equitable and respectful future generation.

Please sign this petition to push for the replacement of “Au se Aurat” with words like “Aushadhi” or “Auzaar” in Hindi primary education books.
