The Issue

Our Constitution stands on a cornerstone of equality, affirming that all men are to be treated as equals. Yet, the City Council's recent enactment of the Hate Crimes Ordinance in Gillette, WY, challenges this fundamental principle. This ordinance, while well-intentioned, infringes upon the very freedoms it seeks to protect by creating divisions rather than uniting our community.

The rights granted by the Constitution are explicit in ensuring that no individual is subjected to discrimination or bias before the law. By introducing a separate legal category for hate crimes, the ordinance inevitably suggests that some victims are afforded different protections than others. This not only undermines our Constitution but also promotes inequality within our judicial system.

While hate crimes are a serious concern, the solution cannot be found in measures that distort the balance of justice. Instead of solving the problem, this ordinance risks deepening divisions. It detracts from addressing the root causes of hate and fails to foster genuine reconciliation and unity among diverse groups in our city.

Rather than categorizing crimes and punishing perpetrators based on perceived intent, we should focus on enforcing the laws already in place, which ensure justice for all victims. Effective solutions involve programs that promote mutual respect and understanding among community members, equipping law enforcement with appropriate training to handle diverse situations sensitively, and fostering dialogue that bridges gaps rather than exacerbates them.

It is imperative that we work towards methods that genuinely uphold equality and unity without compromising our fundamental constitutional values. We call upon the City Council to repeal this ordinance and engage the community in developing inclusive and constructive ways to combat biases and hate.

Join us in reinforcing our commitment to equal treatment under the law. Sign this petition to repeal the Hate Crimes Ordinance and uphold the principles of fairness and justice for every citizen of Gillette, WY. Together, we can build a community that respects and honors all individuals equally. Your support is crucial in making this change possible. Please sign and share this petition today.
