"Repeal Texas Senate Bill SB 20: Protect Kids from Al Abuse, Not Art and Freedom"

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on the Texas House of Representatives and Governor Greg Abbott to repeal Texas Senate Bill 20 (SB 20) before it becomes law. While we support protecting children from Al-generated child pornography-a serious and growing threat-SB 20 goes too far. Its vague wording risks punishing artists, fans, and everyday Texans for enjoying anime, manga, cartoons, and movies. We urge you to scrap this overreach and replace it with a focused law that bans Al abuse without endangering our creative freedoms.

SB 20, passed by the Senate on March 12, 2025, makes it a crime to possess or share "obscene visual material appearing to depict a child"-real or not. That could mean jail time (up to 2 years) for owning a suggestive drawing or an edgy film, even if no real child is involved. This isn't just about stopping Al porn; it's a net so wide it could snag comic shops, conventions, and personal collections across Texas. Our state's laws already tackle child exploitation-SB 20's broad brush adds confusion, not clarity.

We're not against protecting kids. We want Al-generated child porn banned-full to stop. But we don't want a law that accidentally criminalizes a teenager's anime poster, a filmmaker's art, or a store's inventory. Texas thrives on freedom and creativity, from Houston's anime scene to Austin's indie films. SB 20 threatens that. It could cost jobs, spark lawsuits, and drive talent out of state-all for a fix we don't need.

Our Demand:

1. Repeal Texas Senate Bill SB 20 now, while it's still in the House.

2. Replace it with a narrow law targeting Al-generated child pornography, only leaving art, entertainment, and free expression safe.

Sign this petition to tell lawmakers: Protect our kids from real threats, not fictional ones. Keep Texas bold, free, and fair. Repeal SB 20, and get it right.
