The Issue

A few weeks ago, we replaced a portion of our fence, a necessary update due to storm damage that we hoped would offer increased safety and improve the aesthetic value for our property and adjacent neighbors. Imagine our surprise when the village of Stillman Valley approached us, requiring that the new fence be moved by 18 inches inside the property line because of an ordinance which was established in 2017.

The ordinance requires fences to be set back a specific distance, a rule that might seem insignificant on the surface but has deep implications for many homeowners in our community. Not only does complying with this ordinance lead to additional costs for homeowners, but it can also result in loss of usable space and creates a nuisance space of property between 18 and 36” which will be nearly impossible to maintain.By repealing or at least revising the current fence setback ordinance, Stillman Valley can show its commitment to understanding and adapting to its residents' needs. We need to address this matter urgently and shift towards regulations that are both fair and reasonable.

For years, homeowners have been able to communicate with each other about their proposed changes allowing amicable agreements which satisfy everyone’s needs. Therefore, I call on everyone affected by this ordinance, as well as those who support property rights and fair regulations, to join me in this call for change. Please sign this petition to urge the Stillman Valley village authorities to reconsider and repeal this restrictive fence setback ordinance, making our community a better place for everyone.
