Repeal EU Regulation (1143/2014) to Allow Raccoon Ownership in the UK

Repeal EU Regulation (1143/2014) to Allow Raccoon Ownership in the UK
The Issue
Raccoons are smart, resilient, adaptable and make great pets. These remarkable creatures exist all over the world and bring joy to many households. However, under the current EU Regulation (1143/2014), it is a criminal offence to import and own these wonderful animals as pets in the United Kingdom.
Raccoons are pervasive across the globe, demonstrating their adaptability and resilience in various environments. This regulation unfairly restricts our ability to embrace these magical creatures as part of our environment. The potential negative impacts on our biosphere from raccoon ownership are minimal - if not non-existent - compared with their positive contributions.
In fact, studies have shown that raccoons can play an important role in maintaining biodiversity by controlling pest populations (Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute). Furthermore, they can help spread seeds through their foraging habits which contributes positively towards forest regeneration (Journal of Mammalogy).
It is time we reconsider this regulation that criminalizes owning one of nature's most adaptable creatures as a pet. Let us repeal EU Regulation (1143/2014) on invasive alien species management so we can welcome raccoons into our homes without fear of legal repercussions.
Please sign this petition today and help us bring about this change for all UK animal lovers who wish to own a pet raccoon!
