The Issue

I bike on Euclid Avenue almost every day, navigating around the numerous potholes that seem to multiply each time I pass through. And I’m not alone. Many students and residents use this road daily, whether on bikes, in cars, or on foot. These potholes aren't just mere nuisances—they're a serious safety hazard. With each jolt from a hidden depression, bikers risk losing control and getting injured. This road is the lifeline for students commuting to the University of California, Berkeley, and countless others who call Berkeley home.

Potholes do more than just cause discomfort, they escalate the risk of accidents, particularly for bicyclists and motorcyclists. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2020, over 800 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes in the United States. Poor road conditions were significant factors in many of these cases. Fixing these potholes promptly could prevent potential accidents and injuries, ensuring safer travel for everyone.

Addressing this issue would not only improve safety but also contribute to the longevity of the road itself, reducing future maintenance costs. According to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, every dollar spent on road improvement avoids six to ten dollars in future repairs.

The City of Berkeley, renowned for its commitment to sustainability and public wellbeing, has the resources and know-how to address this problem. Allocating funds and prioritizing these repairs demonstrates a dedication to the safety and quality of life for all Berkeley residents.

Join me in urging our local government to take immediate action and repair the potholes on Euclid Avenue. Let's ensure safety and accessibility for all who traverse our community's streets. Please sign this petition to make a positive change.
