Repair the Broken Crosswalk Lights at North Miami Avenue and NW29th Street

The Issue

Every day I cross this intersection where three crosswalk lights have been broken for 8+ months. As a member of this community, I and many others are left uncertain about when it is safe to cross the street. This is not only a daily inconvenience but also a major safety concern since individuals have to determine on their own when they can run across the street to cross.

It’s time for our city leaders to prioritize public safety and take action to fix these broken crosswalk lights immediately. Prioritizing the repair and maintenance of crosswalk lights isn't a luxury, it's a necessity before someone gets hurt.

It is a shame a petition needs to be created in order to fix something as simple as a crosswalk in our city of Miami.

Over the past few months I have made several attempts to contact 311 and Keon Hardemon's office (the District 3 Commissioner under which Wynwood falls) about this issue:

- Multiple calls placed to 311 from May to Sept

- 9/3/24: First call to the District 3 offices regarding the intersection sharing my previous attempts to contact 311 and a follow up email is sent on 9/20/24 with photos of the broken crosswalk signals.

- 9/4/24: I tweeted to the City of Miami about this issue, and they noted they submitted a 311 service request regarding the issue. The service request is opened and closed without the issue being fixed!

- 9/23/24: The Commission Aide confirms receipt of my email and forwards the emails to The Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), which affirms on 9/26/24 that they have forwarded the request to their TSS Division.

- 9/30/24: I sent a follow-up email with photos of cars and trucks blocking the walking pathway, which already does not have a working cross-walk light. I ask the parking authority to spend 30 minutes just watching the intersection to observe what a mess it is.

- 10/10/24: A follow-up email with additional photos.

- 10/11/24: The Commission Aide asked me to follow up by phone, I replied with my best contact number just a few hours later.

- 10/17/24: I follow up via email asking when I will be contacted via phone. Then later that day I received a phone call from the commissioner's office noting they will need to go and take photos of the site. I reminded them that I had sent several photos and even sent more photos that same day. They noted those photos would work, and the team was on it.

Fast-forward to today, November 24th, 2024. There has been no follow-up, and the crosswalk lights are still broken.

In addition, in 2023, Miami was ranked 5th in the nation for having the worst traffic. However, if the city isn't designed to be pedestrian-friendly, residents and visitors have no choice but to rely on congested roads instead of being able to walk safely.
