Repair & Improve Rashcliffe Rec/Top Park This Year!
The Issue
A few months ago i witnessed a heartbreaking incident that underscored the urgent need for repairs at Rashcliffe Rec aka Yews Hill Road “Top Park” A young child was playing joyfully, as children do, when they tripped and fell due to one of the numerous potholes that litter the play area. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident but a daily reality in a space meant to offer safe, joyful recreation for our children. I’ve lost count how many residents Have raised this with myself and existing & former Cllrs.
Kirklees Council, we once again ( now publicly ) implore you to prioritize the restoration and enhancement of Yews Hill Road play area and sports facilities.
Officers and elected cabinet members have been aware for years.
The community has been incredibly patient, yet these unsafe conditions cannot persist any longer. Potholes, worn-out equipment, and degraded sports areas pose significant risks not only to children's safety but also hinder community engagement and physical activity.
Recent reports indicate that areas lacking adequate recreational facilities are linked to higher levels of inactivity and associated health issues among youth. It's paramount that our council addresses these risks proactively, supporting the well-being and development of our children and community. Upgrading Rashcliffe Rec would not only prevent accidents but encourage a healthier, more active lifestyle for our children. We are also asking for a Cctv solution to prevent fly tipping in this area.
We propose a phased approach should commence within 2026, drawing on community input to ensure the renovations meet our neighbourhood's needs. We call for an overhaul of the playground equipment, resurfacing of play and sports areas, and improvement of essential amenities such as benches and safety barriers. These actions will transform the park into a safe, inviting, and vibrant space that the community can be proud of and regularly enjoy.
Kirklees Council has both a responsibility and an opportunity here. Investing in “Top Park” is not just a matter of park maintenance! it's about nurturing a community, empowering our youth & fostering a healthier future for all in T Lodge, Rashcliffe & Lockwood.
