Lawsuit Filed to Stop the Army Corps of Engineers’ Planned Destruction of 1976 Patriotic Mural.
May 7, 2015 – Los Angeles, CA: Seeking to halt the destruction of an iconic bicentennial mural, renowned landscape architect Ron Kammeyer has teamed up with The Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles to file suit against the Army Corps of Engineers and its contractor Oneida Integrated Enterprises. Located near Corona, California, the enormous “Prado Dam Bicentennial Mural” measures 1,000 ft. by 120 ft. It was painted by high school students in 1976 to celebrate the nation’s bicentennial. At that time, then-student Kammeyer’s design was chosen among many submitted. Today, 300,000 cars pass the mural daily.
In July of 2014, The Army Corps of Engineers laid out a plan to remove the mural, citing lead paint, deterioration and graffiti. Kammeyer and other citizens formed Friends of the Prado Dam Mural, which has collected over 8,000 signatures in support of the iconic work, but they have been unable to convince the Army Corps of Engineers to change its plan.
Kammeyer has teamed up with the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles to stop the destruction. Since 2011, The Mural Conservancy has been restoring the famed 1984 Olympic Freeway murals in downtown Los Angeles. Those murals were covered in heavy graffiti but are now almost fully restored. The group believes the Bicentennial Mural can easily be repaired. Both Kammeyer and The Mural Conservancy are being represented by Eric Bjorgum of Karish & Bjorgum, PC in Pasadena, California.
