Build more and exclusive handicap bathroom facilities at the Monuments and Memorials in our Nations Capital
The Issue
6 million people visit the Lincoln Memorial alone every year, yet there is one handicap bathroom stall in the Men's bathroom that isn't even big enough to contain a wheelchair. (door won't latch either) Have you ever had to change a war hero in that bathroom? I have and it took 35 minutes to get Corporal Edwards changed and out of that disgusting stall. It is impossible for anyone in a wheelchair to use that bathroom.
The World War II Memorial is the same way, only a bit cleaner and the door actually closes. Between the Vietnam Wall and Korean Memorial...0 bathrooms. The Iwo Jima Memorial has porta potties; one being handicap that you can't even get a wheelchair in. Arlington National Cemetery is in the same boat as is the Air Force Memorial.
We think this is a travesty and slap in the face for our Veterans and anyone in a wheelchair. It should be an embarrassing statistic for Washington D.C. I have seen it in person; World War II Veterans who soil themselves because they can't get into a bathroom. Many Honor Flights from all over the country visit THEIR Memorials and Monuments, built to honor them, many times a year and we are outraged that they must endure this.
Not only should more bathrooms be made available to these visitors but facilities that cater to handicap people should be a priority and they should have their own facility to accomodate their needs. Like a bathroom facility that has nothing but handicap stalls is a bad thing?
