The aim of this petition is to reopen Wantage Hospital Minor Injury Unit (MIU) which was closed in 2002.

In 21 years since Wantage Hospital MIU was closed the Wantage & Grove ward population has increased from 17,211 (2001) to 21,238 (2023) +23%

However, the population of Wantage Town, Wantage South, Harwell, Blewbury and Grove is expected to grow from 36,235 (2023) to 50,310 (2030) +39% and this isn't including East Challow, Childrey, Westcot, Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett to name a few.

There is also the growing population of Oxfordshire too which is currently around 745,184 (2023) growing to 853,462 (2030) +14.5%.

Currently Oxfordshire has only two 24 hour A&E departments (JRH-Oxford & Horton-Banbury), and just three MIU community hospitals (Abingdon, Witney & Henley).

Why Wantage Hospital? Wantage is one of the fastest growing areas by population in Oxfordshire and £100,359.56 (Inc VAT) was spent on upgrading the plumbing system of the hospital to provide multiple services but not a MIU.  

Therefore, Wantage hospital is virtually ready to be a MIU for the surrounding communities of South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse District.

Wantage Hospital MIU would certainly relieve the pressure on Abingdon MIU and the John Radcliffe Hospital, as well as cutting down on travelling into Abingdon or Oxford City.
