Reopen the University Daycare at UTSA

Reopen the University Daycare at UTSA

The Issue

As a growing community of nontraditional students at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), we are faced with unique challenges that require innovative solutions. One such challenge is the need for reliable, childcare services. The university daycare, which has been closed, was a lifeline for many of them trying to balance their commitments as parents and students.

The closure of this essential service has created an undue burden on those who relied on it. According to data from the Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR), 22% of all undergraduate students in the U.S are parents. This percentage is likely higher within our nontraditional student population at UTSA.

Reopening the university daycare will not only support us in our pursuit of education but also contribute to creating an inclusive campus environment that values diversity and equity. It will send a strong message that UTSA is committed to supporting all its students, regardless of their personal circumstances.

Additionally, this daycare would be an excellent opportunity for students who are studying different degrees to observe child behavior while providing the most safe, and learning environment for them.

We urge the UTSA administration to reconsider their decision and Reopen the university daycare as an intermittent drop-off service. Let's ensure that every student has equal access to quality education without having to worry about childcare during class hours or study sessions.

Please sign this petition if you believe in supporting nontraditional students and promoting educational equity at UTSA.
