The issue

The closure of the Mackay Museum in 2023 by the Mackay Regional Council has left our community without a crucial piece of our cultural and historical identity. The decision was made in an effort to rationalise collections for a new Regional Museum, but with no concrete plan or funding set for the next ten years, the museum's closure has left a gaping void in the preservation and education of our local history.

Growing up in Mackay, the museum was more than just a repository of artefacts; it was a place where stories of our past came alive, where children could learn about the rich tapestry of their heritage, and where visitors could appreciate the depth of Mackay's unique history. It was a beacon of knowledge and a sanctuary for our shared memories, reflecting the diverse cultures that have shaped our region.

Without a dedicated space to showcase our vast array of artefacts and stories, we risk losing an irreplaceable part of our identity. The Mackay Museum housed artefacts that chronicled everything from the sugar cane industry that built our economy, to the indigenous cultures that first called this region home. These stories and treasures must not be consigned to storage.

Bringing the Mackay Museum back is not just about preserving history; it’s about fostering a sense of community pride and continuity. Studies have shown that museums play a vital role in cultural cohesion, education, and even tourism, contributing to local economies by attracting visitors keen to explore new regions. With the museum closed, we miss out on these opportunities, both culturally and economically.

We propose that the Mackay Regional Council revisit their plans and explore alternative solutions to keep the Mackay Museum operational until funding and plans for a new Regional Museum are solidified. This could include exploring partnerships with local businesses, utilising grant opportunities, or engaging community volunteers to maintain and curate its collections.

It is not enough to wait a decade for plans that may remain unfulfilled. We need action now to safeguard our history and continue to educate future generations. Please join me in urging the Mackay Regional Council to reopen the Mackay Museum, restore our access to our cultural and historical heritage, and ensure Mackay's stories remain alive for everyone to explore and cherish.
