Reopen the food pantry on the downtown GVSU campus

Reopen the food pantry on the downtown GVSU campus
The Issue
Being a student at our bustling downtown GVSU campus, I've personally witnessed the struggle many of us face: food insecurity. With the rising cost of living, including tuition, housing, and other day-to-day expenses, it's becoming increasingly hard for students to afford basic necessities like food. Many of us skip meals or rely on cheap, unhealthy options just to get by.
Recent studies show that food insecurity among college students is a growing issue, with surveys revealing that nearly 40% of college students across the country face food shortages. This is an alarming statistic that highlights the urgent need for support systems on campus. Additional cuts (and the threat of cuts) to federal food programs like SNAP only exacerbate this issue. A food pantry dedicated to students could bridge this gap, providing nutritious and free food resources to those who need it most.
GVSU's Replenish program currently has two food pantries - at the Allendale Campus and the DeVos-Cook center on the medical mile. For a few years, a third pantry existed at the Steelcase Library on the downtown campus, but it was eliminated during Covid. Given the downtown campus's central location, accessibility to student housing, and the large number of students who come through it daily, reopening this food pantry would be highly beneficial.
By implementing a food pantry at our campus, we not only address immediate hunger needs but also promote better academic performance, as research has consistently shown the link between nutrition and focus, memory, and cognitive functions. Healthier students are more engaged, more successful, and more likely to complete their degree programs. With the collaboration of university administration, local grocery stores, and non-profit organizations, we can create a sustainable food pantry that not only serves current students but also lays the groundwork for future cohorts.
I urge the university administration to consider this crucial opportunity to support students' well-being. Let's make sure every student has access to the food they need to thrive academically and personally. Please sign this petition to show your support for reopening the food pantry at our downtown university campus. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of countless students.
