Reopen & Protect Oakland Young People’s Centre – A Vital Part of Birmingham’s heritage

The Issue

We, the Birmingham community, demand the immediate reopening and protection of Oakland Young People’s Centre, a historic and culturally significant space that has served our city’s youth and Black Caribbean community for generations.

For decades, Oakland Young People’s Centre has been more than just a youth facility—it has been a creative and cultural institution, fostering artistic expression, education, and community support. Led by community pioneers such as Antony Vaughn and Professor Black, Oakland played a crucial role in Birmingham’s City Carnival, producing iconic costumes and nurturing young talent. The centre has provided a safe and inspiring space for generations of young people, equipping them with essential skills and a sense of belonging.

The sudden closure of Oakland Young People’s Centre is an unacceptable loss to our community. This decision disregards its deep cultural, historical, and social significance and will have a devastating impact on the young people and families who depend on it.

We, the Birmingham community, demand that Birmingham City Council:

 1. Immediately Reopen Oakland Young People’s Centre – Reinstate its vital services for young people and ensure continued access to the creative, educational, and support programmes that have made it a cornerstone of our community.

 2. Grant the Centre Heritage Protection Status – Recognise Oakland as a site of historical and cultural significance, preserving its legacy for future generations.

 3. Explore a Community Asset Transfer – Work with local organisations to ensure a sustainable, long-term future for Oakland, keeping it in community hands.

 4. Invest in Cultural & Youth Services at Oakland – Ensure ongoing funding and support for the centre’s role in arts, culture, and youth development.

 5. Recognise the Contributions of Antony Vaughn & Professor Black – Honour their decades of dedication to the young people of Birmingham and their impact on the city’s cultural identity.

By reopening and protecting Oakland Young People’s Centre, we will:

 • Preserve a space of cultural and artistic significance for future generations.

 • Ensure that young people continue to have access to creative and educational opportunities.

 • Maintain a vital community hub that has shaped Birmingham’s Black Caribbean heritage.

Oakland Young People’s Centre is part of Birmingham’s identity and history. Its closure is a loss we cannot accept.

We, the Birmingham community, call on Birmingham City Council to act now—Reopen and Protect Oakland Young People’s Centre!
