Reopen Ochanya's case for justice

The Issue

I know girls who have been molested and treated wrongly, just like Ochanya Ogbanje, who suffered a tragic fate. Ochanya, a bright young girl from Nigeria, endured years of abuse and molestation at the hands of those who were meant to protect her. From the tender age of eight, her world was marred by unimaginable suffering at the hands of her guardians, a situation that ultimately led to her untimely death at just 13.

It is heartbreaking to know that cases of abuse like Ochanya’s are not isolated. Every day, young girls suffer in silence, their cries unheard, and their pain unaddressed. Ochanya's case, tried in a Nigerian court, remains a beacon of incomplete justice. Despite the evidence and outcry, justice was not fully served.

In 2021, the Federal High Court in Makurdi acquitted Andrew Ogbuja of all charges due to lack of concrete evidence in a decision that has left many in shock. This verdict undermines the fight against child molestation and sends a chilling message to predators. It’s essential that Ochanya’s case is reopened, so that every victim of abuse sees that justice can and will be served.

We urge the Nigerian government and the judicial system to reconsider the evidence and provide a thorough reassessment of the case. The rights of young girls in Nigeria, and indeed everywhere, must be upheld and protected. Justice for Ochanya means justice for every child who still suffers in silence.

We call upon all concerned citizens, human rights organizations, and international bodies to raise their voices and demand that this case be reopened for Ochanya and for justice to be served.

Please sign this petition to support our cause for justice. Let us stand together for Ochanya and ensure that her story compels us to change the status quo. Your signature can help bring about the much-needed change in our society.
